Teach vulnerable kids self defence
LAURA Davies (Post, October 18) wrote about school bullies.
I am now 60, yet still remember the trauma of being physically and verbally abused. For a long time, I thought other children were mostly cruel and adults uncaring.

Adults told me all bullies are cowards. If you challenge them they will back down, if you ignore them, they will get bored.
Nonsense — bullies are psychopaths, you cannot ignore being beaten up, you cannot reason with unreason. You cannot appeal to a non-existent better nature.

What is the solution? For me it was learning effective, practical self defence from the only adult I knew who understood. In the second year, I'd had enough — the worst school bully, several years older than me and a lot bigger, went to pick on me.
I flattened him in front of his cronies. I believe bullies only respect fear. They only fear physical punishment and, also, humiliation.
School bullying is getting worse. Therefore anti-bullying policies are counterproductive. Instead, teach vulnerable, sensitive and decent children self defence.

“You're absolutely correct, bullies only back down when they are terrified. Unfortunately very few criminals fear the law now so they act with impunity.”
