SWANSEA could catch a glimpse of a future Welsh boxing star tomorrow night.

Oceana, on The Kingsway in the city centre, will host some intriguing bouts featuring a number of promising Welsh fighters, and among them is a young boxer who is already earning comparisons with Ricky Hatton.

Chris Jenkins is set to make his long-awaited professional debut tomorrow evening as the Amman Valley-based light-welterweight makes the step up from amateur competition.

In a sparkling amateur career, the 23-year-old fought at two Commonwealth Games and won six junior Welsh titles.

Jenkins has also picked up one gold and two silver medals at the Four Nations Games, three Welsh senior titles and a gold at the Canada Cup.

"I think Chris could be the next Ricky Hatton," said Paul Boyce, who is promoting tomorrow night's event at Oceana.

"He won almost everything he could as an amateur, and he is destined for big things.

"He started out young — he was the youngest boxer at the 2006 Commonwealth Games — so he's been around a long time but he's still only 23.

"He is a really talented boxer who I believe will be at least a British champion."

Jenkins is one of three boxers taking part from the Cwmgors Amateur Boxing Club, along with his brother Ian and Leon 'Lasha' Findlay.

Having sparred and trained together for some time, the three fighters are a tight-knit group.

And in a remarkable coincidence, the girlfriends of all three boxers are all pregnant at the moment.

"It's a great story with those three, who all know each other really well," Boyce added.

"It's a great gym and the coach there, Ronnie Morris, does a fantastic job.

"The purpose of these shows is to promote and develop our boxers, leading them on to bigger fights and titles.

"There is a bit happening in the Swansea area with some great talent coming through, and I want another British champion from the area."

The Amman Valley three will all be on display tomorrow, and Boyce is thrilled by the prospect of seeing them in action.

"Ian 'Ianto' Jenkins won last time out at Oceana in September 2011," he said.

"Leon 'Lasha' Findlay is another good amateur who had a great first-round win against an experienced boxer on the last bill.

"I have also signed popular Swansea light-welterweight Adam Farrell. Carmarthen's Dale Evans and Aberystwyth man Sean Gorman will also be on tomorrow's bill.

"There's a great boxing scene in Swansea. There are some very promising talents here, so it would be great if a lot of people could come to support the event.

"These are up and coming boys who will go on to bigger things. This is a chance for them to make a name for themselves."
