MORE school closure plans have been announced by Swansea Council.

As part of the council's plans to shakeup education in the city Pentrepoeth Infants and Juniors, and Graig Infants schools will close and a new all-through primary school will open on the Pentrepoeth sites.

However, the city's education boss has admitted that the current school buildings are not considered fit for purpose.

Director of education Richard Parry said the condition of the schools was "not good."

He said that both Graig Infants and Pentrepoeth juniors had both been in category C, with things that need addressing.

Mr Parry added: "We would want to address the things we need to address in the school before having a primary school there."

The council will now ask the Assembly for more money to bring the buildings up to standard.

However, if the council's timetable is followed, the closures and creation of the new school would take place in summer 2011, leaving the authority with around 18 months to bring standards up to scratch.

If the plans are given the go-ahead, the council wants to open a Welsh Medium school on the vacated Graig school to meet what councillor Mike Day, cabinet member for education, called "the continually growing demand for Welsh Medium education in the area."

According to the council, the advantage to parents of creating a new school is that parents have only to apply for a place once when their children start school. Pupils then stay in a single school with none of the transition issues that can happen when they move from infant to junior school.

The decision has been taken now after Graig head teacher Sandra Morgan told the council that she intended to retire.

Mrs Morgan told the Post that she wanted parents to receive letters informing them of the proposals before commenting.

Members of Swansea Council's cabinet will consider a report on the plans when they meet on Thursday. If they are given the go-ahead the plans will go out to consultation.

The results of the consultation will then be reported back to cabinet.

FIGURES:

Current figures from Swansea Council show that there is enough capacity in a new primary school incorporating facilities at Pentrepoeth infants and juniors to include children from Graig infants.

Graig infants currently has 51 full time pupils, but capacity for 113.

Pentrepoeth Infants has 98 pupils with capacity for 123

Pentrepoeth Juniors has 239 pupils and capacity for 276

“I attended the proposal meeting today at Graig school..whereby a very heated discussion took place. I e-mailed the evening post to come and do a story and they did indeed show with a photagrapher too!!!. The look on Pat 's(councillor) face was a picture as she mouther "they have a photographer" to her colleague!. But the journalist there was firmly told by Mr Richard Parry that she shouldn't be there as it was not a public meeting. (yet we are members of the public!)..and asked her firmly "who asked you to come?" mmm Mr PArry I DID I ASKED HER !!! What's wrong Mr Parry you want the press to announce the school merger proposal in the above article..from your point of view. But when the press can report the views of those directly affected by your proposals..the press are not allowed to be there!!! Come on Swansea Council wake up and smell the coffee!!! We know you are trying to hold information back. And you will do so by pulling in your solicitor's to call the Eve Post and threaten legal action no doubt!!!....You and your red tape eh? Whatever happened to the freedom of information act or freedom of speech?? You are truly laughable! And it was great to see the parent's challenging the councillor's. They certainly weren't expecting that!!!”

    “Dai Evans,
Too true. I was at the meeting and you could almost see the puppet strings. Also some of the absent Councillors were seen in County Hall immediately prior to the meeting. Why were they not present? Maybee they were going to vote no but were frightened!
Unfortunately we in Bonymaen didn't have the luxury of voting Lib/Dem. Perhaps they didn't have the proverbials to even try. I would never ever vote for that shambles now even if they were to beg me on bended knees.
We need to make savings, but it should only come from front line services such as schools as a very LAST RESORT, not first choice which is what is happening now.”

“How typical -- In the most important issue of Swansea's children education, only 6 cabinet members could bother to turn up--- Why are we paying these cabinet councillors such high salary's?. Surely it their duty to attend meetings.
In my area unfortunatly we have two Lib/Dem councillors--not one of them consulted any of the residents about childrens education and voted for these cuts and closures off their own back--What another Bl----dy sham.
As far as these Independent Councillors are concerned they are a total disgrace to the word INDEPENDENT meaning ("freedom from control"). and should be ashamed of themselves. In future elections they should be made to stand as either Lib/Dems or as a "PUPPETS PARTY." Councillors are paid to much and will only vote on issues to increase their bank balance rather than following their conscience, Why not do away with this political theme from local councils then perhaps not only can we save a vast sum of finances, we could attract honourable people with feelings for our City.”

“Re the voting to close Cwm school - the Cabinet members of Swansea Council decided to close it- only 6 councillors turned up for ther Cabinet meeting, the Independent councillor for Bonymaen was there & abstained. This week the voting results for the meeting that set the budget that put the final nail in Cwm school are out. All Lib -Dem & Independent councillors voted for the budget.”

“This is terrible news and we should indeed protest - not only about these cuts but also the swingeing cuts in Further and Higher Education implemented by Mandelsson. Education is paying the price for the bankers' greed - the entire education sector is being slashed and burned, and the future of every child in the country with it.”
