THE closure of another Swansea school has been confirmed.

A week after the Welsh Assembly confirmed the closure of Eastside school Cwm primary, the axe has fallen on Gower school Llanmorlais primary.

It will close in August 2010 and all children currently in reception and the older year groups will be offered a place at Penclawdd Primary School.

Parents, pupils and staff had mounted a passionate campaign to save the village school, which has been at the heart of community life for 116 years.

However, Swansea Council pressed on and in March last year approved closure plans as part of its Quality in Education (QEd) 2020 Programme. Yesterday, the Welsh Assembly finally backed the proposal, which will mean the village school closes for good this summer.

Parents of children in the nursery, who will be moving to reception in September, are being asked to apply for a reception place at Penclawdd Primary School. This also applies if the child or children are currently in nursery at Penclawdd itself.

Llanmorlais Primary head teacher Ann Owen and chair of Governors Viv Howard issued a statement saying an assembly had been held yesterday for parents, children and supporters to break the news that the school would close on August 31, 2010.

Mrs Owen attended, even though her husband Gareth died on Wednesday.

"The school is a little jewel, shining with innovative practice, in Swansea's crown," they said.

"Its closure will rip the heart out of this close-knit community. Everybody is devastated.

"It would have been easy for staff to give up, instead the school has continued to develop and provide the children with an outstanding standard of education.

"We realise that in the future more schools will close throughout Wales and we wouldn't want anyone to have to go through the same agonising wait for the decision from the Welsh Assembly that we had to suffer.

"The uncertainty of continuity causes huge stress for children, staff and parents. We implore them to review their procedures."

“Chris Davies, Swansea - The BNP make amateurs look professional! It is hardly suprising that our Educational system has been in turmoil for years, if the likes of the BNP's Kevin Edwards was selling "....IT Solutions and Educational Books", to our schools!

As the BNP and its fellow weirdo chums from other countries, has tried glorify Hitler and Demonise Immigrants, any references they make to their own perceptions of the world, whether coming from a misuse of government statistics or newpaper reports, cannot be trusted!”

    “You speak for yourself.

I speak on behalf of the victimised staff and parents who support schools such as Llanmorlais and Dyffryn Afan.

Shining examples of what education should be, sacrificed because of resources being drained into areas of mass immigration and forced multiculturalism !

    FACT AND TRUTH !

Get out into your community and speak to real people like I have then you might understand what they are concerned about.

Don't sit behind your computer as a "Keyboard Coward " start talking to real people.

    That's what I do !

Yes this is a report from the ONS.

    Look at it yourself.”

“Come now Kevin, you know that report isn't an ONS one but the BNP's interpretation. It has zero relevance to South Wales and you know it.

Dyfryn Afan has something like 36 kids attending. It's basic economics that such schools are unsustainable and in all honesty should have been closed years ago.

You'd think that with all the straw clutching the BNP do they would be rather skilled at it by now. Still very very amateurish though.”

“Joe-- I would love to do my duty as a grandfather of three children of school age and fight this madness, by our ruling council, in distroying Swansea's children's state education, in closing schools and taking the careers away of over 100 teachers and staff . Though unless parents of the schools that are affected by these closures and cuts are prepared to take a lead--or even the teachers trade union were to issue a vote of no confidence in the incompetence of this ruling council. The effect of a few people to protest will be laugh at by these politicans.
Example Joe- Approx-- over 6,000 people signed letters and petitions, which were sent to County Hall and The Assembly about school closures. Result -- These politicans did not take any notice, it just appears to have been a done deal.
Really, it is also down to all School Govenors of the schools either threatend with closures or/and them due to close, to organise a mass protest.
I would certainly give all the support i could to this cause.
I have already protested and written to the Evening Post.(Have your say column) Collected protest signatures-- Also i have spoken many times on Radio, presented by " Kevin Johns" (Swansea Sound Programme) protesting about the treatment of our future generations education.
I strongly believe that the only way forward is a mass protest by "Peoples Power".”

“Kev is right for once, where birth rates are higher, there is a higher demand for schooling (common sense). Of course, the majority of the 'evil immigrants' that Kev is scared of are here legally and are hard working tax payers paying for things like education.

Sorry Kev I dont see how playing the race card here is relevant to this discussion, you silly boy.”

“Yet again a non democratic society, no faith in local council and The Welsh Assembly, support for closure statistics plucked out of the air presented poorly embarrassingly and even laughable, decision to close the school was made from the start.
Well done all another ridiculous decision made but no need to worry you will still get your bonuses from the result and you 6.5% pay rise, what a terrible Country we live in!!!”

“Roy, I believe it is your calling, and indeed your duty, to organise a democratic coalition of like-minded people (with the exception of the far-right BNP racist band-wagoners) to overthrow the current administration and represent the peoples overwhelming desire to protect our schools and other essential public services from the sheer incompetence that is ultimately born from the short-sighted neo-liberal free market ideology that is undermining our children's future and our caring, considerate civilised our way of life.”

“I had the pleasure many years ago of visiting Llanmorlais School many years ago when I worked as a Rep selling IT Solutions and Educational Books.

From what I remember Llanmorlais was a shining example of how local schools should be run.

Another school very similar is Dyffryn Afan Primary School another possible tragic loss to local education.”

“Megan-- you are so right with your comments and I would love to see a few more thousand, with your parental attitude--Mike Day when asked can he guarantee parents, that childrens class sizes will not increase in numbers, he stated that it is inevitable that some class sizes will be increased. The word (some) will properly mean MOST.
This ruling council is a disgrace, to make children the scape-goats of their mismanagement of our finances.
For people like DAY--HOLLEY and the rest of these people who voted to close schools is not only total madness but also criminal--- They are depriving children the same education opportunity that they had. ( Private schools are now advertising--- Invest in you childs future) . I am really concern that state education will decline in our City .
Unless "Joe Public" stands up and be counted.
Before closing any more schools they must build new schools first. Our childrens education is the most important time in their life. --- If we do not give the children of Swansea a chance of a first class education opportunity, it will certainly come-back and bite us in the future.
This council "short term gains" attitude will result "in long term disaster".”
