Swansea people are unsatisfied, Neath Port Talbot people are too anxious, but they are all feeling chilled in Carmarthenshire - new Government statistics have revealed
FEELING satisfied with your life? Not if you live in Swansea new statistics have revealed.
The Government stats show high levels of lack of satisfaction and low self-worth in Swansea and plenty of very anxious people in Neath Port Talbot, compared with other parts of Wales.
The stats were compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In one question they asked adults aged over 16: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your life nowadays?”
Newport scored the lowest satisfaction mark, followed by Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil and then Swansea in fifth.
Another question asked: “Overall, to what extent do you feel the things you do in your life are worthwhile?”
Swansea people did not feel very worthwhile unfortunately, coming fourth out of the 22 local authorities in Wales, behind Newport, Torfaen, and Rhondda Cynon Taf.
People were also asked: “Overall, how happy did you feel yesterday?”
Swansea avoided the top five for the least happy people in response to this question, and it also failed to figure on a table of those who ranked their anxiety highly when asked: “Overall, how anxious did you feel yesterday?”
In fact, Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire had some of the least anxious people in Wales, with Carmarthenshire coming out top for the highest proportion of people ranking their anxiety at between 0 and 1 on a scale of 10.
But Neath Port Talbot also had some of the most anxious - with 22 per cent rating their anxiety levels at between 6 and 10.
Gwynedd had some of the highest average ratings of personal well-being across all four questions.
The Isle of Anglesey and Gwynedd were among the areas with the highest average life satisfaction, worthwhile and happiness. The Isle of Anglesey and Gwynedd also had high proportions of people rating life satisfaction as 9 or 10 out of 10.
Newport had a high proportion of people reporting 4 or less out of 10 for life satisfaction and happiness and Blaenau Gwent was also among the areas with the highest proportions of people rating their life satisfaction, worthwhile and happiness as very low.
Merthyr Tydfil had the highest average anxiety and was also among the areas with the highest proportions of people rating their life satisfaction as 4 or less out of 10.
The ONS said areas in Wales with the highest unemployment rates were also among those with the lowest personal well-being, including Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil.
Areas of Wales with higher personal well-being had much lower unemployment rates ranging from 6.6 per cent in Carmarthenshire to 6.7 per cent in Gwynedd and 7.4 per cent in the Isle of Anglesey.
Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil which have some of the lowest personal well-being ratings in Wales also have the lowest average life expectancy rates at birth.
Average life expectancy at birth in Blaenau Gwent was 77.75 years and in Merthyr Tydfil 78.05 years.
