Swansea man jailed for indecent images of children

A 69-YEAR-OLD has been jailed after he was found with 52 indecent images of children on his computer.

David John Baker, of Watkin Street, Mount Pleasant, Swansea, was given an eight-month custodial sentence at Swansea Crown Court.

Baker previously pleaded guilty to 13 counts relating to having and making indecent images of children and of inciting a girl aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity.

Geraint Walters, prosecuting, told the court police attended Baker's home address on September 13, 2011, and seized computer equipment.

An examination of it took place, with a total of 52 static indecent images of children on it.

A number of "chat logs" were also found, which police took time to assess.

In October, Baker was arrested and taken to Cockett Police Station, where he was interviewed about the images.

"He admitted being responsible for the deliberate download of indecent images and the chat logs," said Mr Walters.

"The computer was password protected and he was the only person who knew the password.

"He had engaged in chat with other web users and had been sent indecent photos of children."

The court heard Baker also signed up to child and teen- targeted chat rooms, and believed he was talking to children during a number of conversations.

"He sent photographs of his genitals," said Mr Walters.

"He described it as sick and denied he was in any way sexually attracted to children."

John Allchurch, mitigating for Baker, said: "I would ask you to consider the personal circumstances of the defendant, he's in poor health," he said.

Judge Paul Thomas, QC, sentenced Baker to eight months in jail.

He said: "Your sister described what you have done as stupid, with the sub-text that it's in some way a fairly harmless, if inappropriate, hobby.

"What in these circumstances she fails to acknowledge is just how unspeakably and unimaginably vile the images are."
