Swansea A level students top of the class
SWANSEA A-level students have achieved results well above the average for Wales again this year.
In all, 24.2 per cent of Swansea entrants gained an A* or A grade compared to 22.9 per cent in Wales.
And the best of the best did better in Swansea with 6.8 per cent of our students attaining grade A* compared to 6 per cent for Wales.
The overall pass rate of 98.3 per cent in Swansea compares to 97.6 per cent for Wales.
Will Evans, cabinet member for learning and skills, said: "Once again we have excellent A-Level results from our students, with results above Welsh average, despite the overall fall in the higher grades nationally.
"These results reflect well on the hard work put in by the students and their teachers, and underline the high standards achieved by Swansea schools. I wish all our students well for their futures in higher education and beyond."
A total of 1,378 A-Level exams in 46 different subjects were sat by 528 students in year 13 (Upper Sixth form).
A spokeswoman for Swansea Council added: "The most popular subject at A-Level this year was mathematics, with 176 entries, which had particularly good results with 46 per cent of entrants achieving the top grades of A and A*, with 90 per cent attaining a C grade or above.
"In 31 subjects, there was a pass rate (Grades A*-E) of 100 per cent while in 14 different subjects, 30 per cent or more of all entries attained top grades A* and A.
"In five of these subjects, more than half of the students attained these top grades."
Meanwhile Steven Stokes, Swansea Met senior marketing and communications officer, has offered some advice for students who did not get the required grades for the university of their choice.
He said: "Students should get some advice from their careers advisors or tutors about the options available to them and look up the institutions with vacancies in their chosen subject. They can do this via the Ucas website, the media or individual institution websites. Ucas themselves also offer a helpline on 0871 468 0 468."
