Swansea must do more to increase recycling rates
SWANSEA "must do more to increase recycling rates", a cabinet member has said.
June Burtonshaw, cabinet member for place, said work was being done but greater efforts were needed to meet targets set by the Welsh Government.
"We're doing all we can to increase recycling rates across the city with initiatives like a concentrated advertising and communications campaign and the change to bi-weekly collection of recyclable waste," she said.
"The combination of these schemes means that we're now recycling more than 45 per cent of our recyclable waste as a city and that attitudes towards recycling are gradually changing for the better."

She added: "But it's clear we need to do more to reach the statutory target of 52 per cent by the end of March next year.
"Not reaching the target means there's a chance of facing heavy fines and missing out on grant funding in future."

“Unsettling comment by Gorseinon Joe who wants to 'deal' with residents who just put out black bags. If these same people pay their council tax to have refuse collected then that should be enough, shouldn't it? Please don't tell me that recycling is saving the planet as I know that stuff still goes into landfill at Felindre if the price for recycled material is too low.”

“The residents wash and sort the waste for the council, who then sells it on. Why dont the council pass that profit back to the residents one way or another?”

“I would be more impressed with a politician telling me I have to do more to save the environment if there was evidence that the Council was doing the same. The number of lights left burning at the Civic Centre offices in the evenings is a disgrace.”
