Swansea eye Benitez and Gomis as Laudrup confirms Bony interest
MICHAEL Laudrup has confirmed Swansea City’s interest in Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony, as the Swans prepare back-up plans to sign Bafetimbi Gomis or Christian Benitez.
Swansea have been in talks for more than a week with the Dutch club and Ivorian frontman Bony over a potential club-record £10.2 million transfer.
Bony, who scored 31 Eredivisie goals in 30 games last season, has stated in previous interviews his desire to join Laudrup’s side, though he has since been reluctant to comment on his future.
As negotiations continue, Swansea are working on deals for Lyon’s French international forward Gomis and Benitez, who plays for Mexican champions Club America.
The Swans have also bid for FC Twente’s Nacer Chadli, and Laudrup, who is in Holland for Swansea’s pre-season tour, has confirmed his interest in the Belgian winger and Bony.
He told Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf: “I shouldn’t talk about players who are not here — but everyone knows we are looking at forwards across Europe and those two have done very well in the Eredivisie. They are both interesting players.”
As transfer talks with Vitesse drag on, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins admits they may be forced to look elsewhere.
“It is very difficult and gradually we have become frustrated,” he said.
“We would like some clarity soon because if it does not work out with Bony we need to go to Plan B.”
Vitesse manager Peter Bosz, however, is preparing himself for Bony’s potential exit.
“Bony could quickly leave (or) may remain for weeks and, who knows, it is not a transfer,” he said.
“But it was immediately made clear to me that I have to take into account his departure.”
