A WOMAN who went out to buy milk the morning after a night out was found to be almost three times the drink-drive limit when stopped by police.

Officers spotted Sian Wedlake, aged 46, of Cwrt Rhosyn, Llansamlet, driving without headlights at 5.35am on February 28.

Prosecutor Anwen Evans told city magistrates the police officers had stopped at a Tesco petrol station in Nantyffin Enterprise Park.

"Their attention was drawn to a grey Ford Escort that drove from the main car park to the filling station with no lights on," she said.

"The officers approached Mrs Wedlake when she got out of the car. While speaking to officers, it became clear she was intoxicated."

Wedlake, who has no previous convictions, was arrested and taken to Swansea Central Police Station.

The 46-year-old pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. She had 100 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

David James, defending, said: "The situation is the defendant is the main carer for her husband who suffered a brain injury some two years ago.

"On the day in question, her husband's friend had come to see her.

"He's the only person who can relieve her of full-time care. She went next door. The rugby was on. She had too much to drink."

Mr James said Wedlake later went home to bed, but awoke the following morning to find she had no milk.

"She obviously had the remnants of alcohol in her blood," he said.

He added that due to her being a carer she would have difficulty undertaking any unpaid work.

Wedlake was banned from driving for two years and fined £400 with £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
