A SWANSEA doctor and mother is urging parents to ensure their kids are protected against measles.

With more than 200 confirmed cases of the disease in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, GP Charlotte Jones is calling for everyone to check whether their kids have been immunised — and if they have not, to get the jab as soon as possible.

  1. warning Dr Charlotte Jones has recently seen her first cases of measles.

Dr Jones said people should not be complacent about the disease, which can lead to serious complications and in extreme cases can be fatal, and if they have any concerns about the vaccine they should talk to their doctor.

She said: "We have seen a rise in the number of cases of measles across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot in the past few weeks.

"I was working in Neath when I saw my first cases — it was something I had only read about in medical textbooks until this current outbreak.

"Measles can lead to serious complications such as encephalitis — an infection of the brain — and serious bacterial infections.

"It can even be fatal.

"I would strongly urge all parents to check whether their children have had both doses of their measles vaccination, and if they haven't to get it done as soon as possible."

There have been 209 cases of measles across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot in the current outbreak — 20 in the past week alone.

The outbreak includes cases reported among pupils at 32 primary and secondary schools.

Public Health Wales and the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board (ABMU) say they are working together to tackle the problem.

Dr Jones, who is also deputy chairwoman of the General Practitioners Committee Wales and manager of the out-of-hours service for ABMU, said parents needed to take action.

She said: "I can understand why some parents have concerns — I am a parent myself and after looking at the evidence I wanted to protect my children from this serious disease and so had my children vaccinated.

"If you have any worries at all, talk to your doctor."

“Who is ths Wakefield guy, anyway?
    I couldn't care less.

    I expect facts not propaganda.

As I said before: you won't get answers. Just repetitiveness”

I am not interested in who or what Andrew Wakefield said or did! This is fact not imagination and there are thousands with similar experiences! The day my grandson had his MMR it changed his life forever Do I know whether it was that injection no I don't! But no way did my youngest grandson get the MMR it is far to risky and there are others out there with the same fears!! Thats all that's asked is this "How many have contracted measles you know 1 2 maybe 6 what ever and how many had the MMR injection its important surely you understand that! No probable using words like that mean ether you don't know or someone is trying to juggle the figures! We the humble joe public feel like guinea pigs we can only deal with experiences and this is fact my brother in law is one of 13 children he has 22 nieces and nephews there are 2 that are autistic what I call mildly not one of them have contracted measles! Those two and my grandson have some thing in common they all have allergy's!! When I am asked about my boy and if there is a connection with the MMR what do I say!! first I ask have you notice any allergic reaction to eggs my boy his lips would swell up as I feel there is a connection "maybe"!! I think
young couples deserve real figures so they can make a informed decision! Surely someone is keeping track records if not why not give us the freedom to make the decision we have that right don't we!!”

“The so called 'research'' over MMR/autism has been completely and utterly discredited, as has the man behind it. It completely failed the acid test of all scientific research - other research programmes duplicating the results. Many tried, over a period of several years, but none ever did.

The doctor at the centre of this so-called 'research', Andrew Wakefield was also discredited. The General Medical Council found three dozen charges against him proved, including four counts of dishonesty and 12 counts involving the abuse of developmentally challenged children. The panel ruled that Wakefield had "failed in his duties as a responsible consultant", acted both against the interests of his patients, and "dishonestly and irresponsibly" in his published research. Dr Andrew Wakefield was struck off.

We would be failing public safety responsibilities if we did not make this absolutely clear to anyone following the dialogue on this forum.

There is, right now, a real risk to around 8,000 children in the ABMU area, who have not received MMR, that they could catch measles. Measles can be a very serious illness and children have already been hospitalised locally because of it. So please ensure your child has their MMR vaccination.

There is a page on Andrew Wakefield and his MMR 'research' on Wikipedia if anyone wants to read about this in more detail: http://tinyurl.com/6ceoex

Actually, I don't want to know what it DOESN'T contain but what it DOES contain.
And not only MMR, but all the other NHS-approved other childhood vaccinations as well. It is incredible that in a civilized country there is only one type of vaccination available.
But on the other hand: Is modern day Britain still a civilized country or on the brink of third world status, anyway? Me wonders....

    @ JohnSW4

    Pseudo-information to bias public opinion.
    You won't get any answers.
If you really want to get down to the bottom of things you may have to investigate internationally.

And once again: I am NOT one of these conspiracy theorists. I am simply interested in having facts in my hands, not propaganda material.”

“Still confusing! confirmed and "probable" cases of measles no records of how many actually had measles but we will use the figure of 89%! of what number!! 10,000 cases or 10 case there is a big difference! Are we to assume that it was 10,000 because we are told there are out breaks of measles and its is necessary to get "every"child injected with the MMR! What if the "probable" cases was just a heat rash etc! And if the 11% of those who had the single/double MMR and still caught measles if you use the 10,000 then a 1,000+did not get protected even with your figure's
of 90% and 99% being protected
There are now 61,570 schoolchildren in the state-funded sector that have been recorded as having some kind of autistic spectrum disorder and they make up almost one percent of the entire school population
http://tinyurl.com/6nrara3 I cant honestly explain those "real" numbers not "probable"!
Surely its time to give parents real statistics so they can make an informed decision! Most people don't come in contact with severely autistic children/adults and they must have all info there is not maybe or probability's!!”

“A lot of helpful information about the MMR vaccination can be found on the NHS Choices website http://tinyurl.com/b87kr7n

In terms of the content of the MMR vaccination, it does not contain thiomersal or other preservatives. The vaccine is manufactured using weakened viruses that cannot cause the actual disease it is protecting against.

The most effective way to protect against measles is to have x2 MMR vaccinations. One dose of the MMR vaccination is 90% effective against measles and after two doses 99% effective.

Of the laboratory confirmed and probable cases of measles reported in Mid and West Wales since the 1 November 2012 89% have no history of MMR vaccination. 3% say they have had two doses of MMR and 8% say they have had one dose of MMR. However, we have yet to confirm if these patients did have one or two doses as it needs to be verified by medical records.”

    “@ JohnSW4

As a vet I have been involved in the discussion process about vaccines for AI (bird flu)and whether "it would be worth producing vaccines". On the other side the discussion about the safety of Tamiflu and Co.
Over the time I understood that it is all about profits, big international industries and PLEASE no questions by the consumers, i.e. patients.
As I said before, I am not a great fan of the NHS and feel that rather than providing people with answers they work on their "targets of 100% vaccination cover". And again: no questions, please.”

I don't buy into the MMR/autism theory. But I know that some of the additives can be very aggressive and can do more harm than good.
We don't know as well but I have no doubt that the day "my boy" was injected things went wrong!!
Now having been involved with it for 21 years the things I have observed is that there are so many the same age as "my boy" some far worst and some well say mildly! We are left with looking for answers I keep reading reports in the press about measles outbreaks but never a mention if those involved as having had the MMR! I have a large family loads of nieces and nephews some have had the injection and some who have not not one of them have caught measles in my street there are three young family's no measles and I take an obvious interest!
When you ask questions there is never answers one Pediatrician said go home and deal with it!!! If vaccination is that good for us, provide us with sufficient information."”

    Yes, that would be interesting!
We were offered the Rubella vaccination at the age of 14.
One of my class mates (an aspiring journalist) went from a healthy young teenager to ending up in intensive care within a week of the jab and now lives in a care home.
I don't buy into the MMR/autism theory. But I know that some of the additives can be very aggressive and can do more harm than good.
    Hence my request.

"If you got nothing to hide, you got nothing to fear"
Often repeated on the radio, this sentence should be true for the NHS and GPs. If vaccination is that good for us, provide us with sufficient information.”

Please will you give everyone the exact figure's of those who contracted Measles and who had the MMR!!!!Not being medically qualified as many parents are the same it would be nice to know exactly how many? My interest is factual we have lived through this reality! My grandson at 18 month had the MMR in his leg as soon as we got him home his leg was swollen up and in the night he developed a high temperature and over a few week he went through a personality change from a laughing gurgling smiley baby into one that constantly cried and rarely slept! Proof all the videos I personally took of him reinforces my belief some thing went wrong the day he had that MMR what exactly we will never know! Now for all those young parents no bull straight numbers how many had the MMR and also caught Measles surely some one has taken an interest in that fact if not it only leave me with one conclusion!!”
