Swansea East AM Mike Hedges calls for support for legal protection for shopworkers against violence
A SWANSEA AM is calling on all Welsh MPs to throw their support behind a Parliamentary Bill aiming to give shopworkers legal protection against violence, abuse and threats incurred in the course of their job.
Mike Hedges, Labour AM for Swansea East, has tabled an Assembly Statement of Opinion (SOP) which supports the Protection of Workers Bill introduced last year.
He said: "It's a shocking fact that on a daily basis, a shopworker somewhere is assaulted, threatened or abused while trying to do their job. Such actions are totally unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
"The Protection of Workers Bill seeks to combat these abuses by giving shopworkers the adequate legal protection they deserve when in the workplace.

"Although we don't have the powers to legislate on this matter in the Welsh Assembly, it's important that we highlight to the public the problems shopworkers still face as well as show our support for those who simply want to go to work and do their jobs free from the fear of violence."

“roadmonkey, have you any concept of politics? he tabled an assembly statement of opinion. The clue is in the word assembly which last time i looked was in cardiff bay. I dont know if he has ambitions of being an MP but if he has what is wrong with that?. If a person starts off on a shop floor and works hard and becomes a supervisor, then a manager, then an area manager and finally is elected to the board we all say well done he worked his way to the top. But if a politician works his way up he seem to look at that in a different light. Why?”

“I would have thought that Mr Hedges would concentrate on his job in Cardiff Bay. Or does he have ambitions for a seat in Westminster?”

“Benny, this is a daily occurence for health staff, council staff and even you or me walking in the street. Technically an offence but difficult to act upon unless you have a witness and are prepared to go through a lot of formal police proceedures...and probably easily resolved with an apology.
I am not against the Welsh Assembly my criticism is that it is pushing through Tory cuts, neither Labour nor Plaid supporters voted for this. Are you Benny in favour of cuts to jobs and services?”

“weslangdon, when was the last time you saw a case of a shop worker who had been verbally abused going to court?. Or hearing of someone being cautioned or given an ASBO for such behaviour. Just another of you'r posts ranting against the welsh assembly”

“All these things are already criminal offences; he is trying to obtain a bit of cheap publicity and at the same time divert attention from the Welsh Governments cuts programme.”
