Swansea DVLA worker appointed MBE for services to reducing transport fraud
A SWANSEA man has been appointed MBE for services to reducing transport fraud.
Phillip Gyles Hodge has worked at the DVLA in Swansea for a decade and helps crack down on people illegally obtaining and using driving licences.
The 30-year-old father-of-three found out he had been appointed in this year's New Year's Honours List in November.
He said: "It has been extremely difficult to keep it under my hat until now.

“I find it incredible how people can possibly comment on something they know nothing about. Is the previous person who commented part of the honours judging panel?? Of course not buy he is saying that Mr Hodge had it for sitting at his desk!!!
Maybe this person is exceeding expectations in their own job, that's if they even work or do they spend their days commenting on articles on South Wales evening post.
At the end of the day, the honours system is a prestigious award and Mr Hodge is well deserved of it.
If there was a award for being a know it all ill nominate you as people will see from the amount of comments you make on here you have an opinion on everything.........”

“This just goes to show how well meaning awards lose their shine when they are given out to people who are in effect 'just doing their job', and to so called celebrities who's work is nothing more than awful at best. Tracey Emin awarded the CBE, Cherie Blair also CBE for services to women's issues(?). Is it any wonder that 116 people turned down honours from the Queen in the past three years. No I am sorry Mr Hodge but an MBE for sitting at your desk for ten years without promotion then suddenly an MBE (and promotion, how fortunate!) belittles this once prestigious award.”

“How can I nominate someone for an honour?
If you know somebody who you think has made a real difference, whether that's through their job or through working with their community, you can nominate them for an honour. There are lots of different types to choose from depending on what that person has achieved.
All you need to do is fill in an honours nomination form and get letters of support from at least two other people who know the work of the person you're nominating. You need to make sure you return these ahead of deadline for making nominations. There's guidance available to help you fill in the forms.”

“I would say the most important line in that comment is......I'm not privy to the nomination details. You shouldn't comment unless you have all the facts.
I am unsure why you think senior management level or 40 years service is a reason for getting the recognition as you said above this is just civil servants.
Feel free to look at the details for nominations and if you feel there are more deserving people then nominate then instead of putting comments on here about something you don't even know the full details.
Don't worry you won't rain on Mr Hodges parade. He deserved the recognition for the outstanding work he does. Huge congratulations to Mr Hodge and his family. I'm sure everyone at the DVLA is as proud as me.”

“I am sure that this is a proud day for this chap and his family.
Obviously I am not privy to the details of the award nomination but I find it incredible that civil servants are rewarded for doing their jobs. I could maybe understand if someone has worked for the Civil Service for 40 years and has worked themselves up into a very senior position but Mr Hodge has only worked there for a decade and the work that he AND his team do is probably no different to council officers who chase up housing benefit fraud.
Sorry Mr Hodge, I don't want to rain on your parade but I think that there are numerous volunteers, charity workers and all round good citizens that deserve recognition just as much or even more than you.”
