Swansea Council acts over lamp-posts in danger of collapsing
DANGEROUS lamp-posts at risk of collapse have been taken down by Swansea Council.
The emergency action was prompted by the second phase of routine streetlight testing, which found the column structures of 50 lamp-posts were severely deteriorated.

Further lamp-posts which are not at risk of collapse but are in a poor state will also be removed.
So far, the council has tested 1,000 of the 19,000 streetlights in the city.
Council head of highways Carl Humphrey said the authority was continuing its testing programme to get a better idea of the condition of street lights throughout Swansea.
"Some columns have had to be removed immediately to ensure pedestrians or properties are not put at risk,'' he said.
"Others are in need of removal within the next 12 months.''
Once the testing phase is completed, the council plans to develop a lighting replacement programme.
Cabinet member for the environment John Hague said: "Maintaining street lighting is an essential part of our responsibility in terms of providing a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists.
"The work we are currently doing will enable us to provide the high standards of service that residents expect from us."
Residents can contact the council's highways service on 0800 317990 to report any faults relating to street lighting such as a hole or crack in the lighting column.

“James Sheridan.
O.K. you win. I revise my statement to: Nobody sensible wanted the bendy bus.
LibDem-led mess therefore LibDem/Indep @ S/ responsibility. The LibDem Cllrs are not complaining because they would not dare criticise their own Party's incompetence
Bendy-bus imposed on Swansea residents without consultation.
Original bendy-bus scheme viewed by Labour cllrs did NOT require changes to the roads.
The bendy-bus route was already covered by the 4, 4A, 2A, 3 and 3A so it is hardly surprising that passengers use the service.
Have you seen the revised bus timetables? Service frequencies reduced due to "lack of demand".
It is a pity that the centre of Swansea is a No Need To GO area but, hey that's plus points for Parc Trostre and St David's 2. The lights work in Cardiff and Llanelli. The last person to leave Swansea won't have to switch off the lights as there won't be any.
Never mind. Less developed countries don't have street lights says Steve Jones of Uplands.”

“Re:Paul, West Cross
What your observations have failed to 'illuminate', is that it is Labour Councillors that appear to be complaining about the Lamp posts the most, hence my Labour Councillor references! So, are you happy for the said Labour Councillors, including your West Cross Labour Party Ward buddy (!?), not to put their money where their mouth is!? It would be a nice gesture if all Councillors, regardless of Party, would offer to give up for one year, their Expenses, to cover the cost of the replacement of the Lamp posts and would even be a nice thing for the Councillors to do at Christmas time, to give us the 'present' of such a gesture!
Paul, you seem to be transfixed with the Lib Dems and the Bendy Buses, as that is really your hidden meaning of your comments;
".....the LibDem-led Swansea Council has allocated most of its Highways budget on a scheme that nobody seems to have wanted".
As you appear to have been quite definative in your above stated comment in the use of your key word 'nobody', ignores the fact that Public Transport Users are travelling on the Bendy buses, ignores the fact that the scheme was Council approved and was later supported by Labour from their own original idea and where is your statistical evidence to prove or not, that the Bendy bus was a scheme that had Public support!? Was the Swansea Bendy bus scheme largely opposed by car owners!? Are Bendy Bus route Users happy with; the Bendy Buses, timetables, comfort, the Host/Hostess/Pilot experience and was it worthwhile to endure the roadworks that resulted in the reconfiguration of the city centre!? The fact is Paul, for all your 'Googling' prowess, you might find it difficult to accurately answer the above, including without a certain degree of bias!”

“Paul, West Cross - since when are street lamps essential? Many less developed countries don't have them and they are safe with less accidents and less crime.”

“James Sheridan.
Your suggestion about giving up expenses was directed towards Labour Councillors and not at your LibDem chums - I wonder why?
The point that I am making is that the LibDem-led Swansea Council has allocated most of its Highways budget on a scheme that nobody seems to have wanted. Holley & Co cannot find money for essential items, like street lamps, because they have wasted the Assembly grants on follies and disregarded the basics.”

“Re:Paul, West Cross
I threw the lamp away when I found my wishes didn't work when you continued to post comments!
Seriously, I know that you are aware of the answer to your own question, as you can 'Google' away, you old Techno you! If you are able to use a Telescope, can you see the Bendy Buses from your West Cross Grotty, sorry, Grotto!?
It is noted that you haven't commented on my earlier suggestion that Councillors should consider to give up their Expenses for one year to help pay for the Lamp posts replacements! Or is Mark Child and his Labour buddies friends of yours!?”

“James Sheridan.
Remind us again, oh genie with no lamp, how much did the roadworks for the bendy-bus cost?”

“Re:Cllr Mark Child, Labour, West Cross
Child by name, Child by nature!? Sorry, couldn't resist that one!
Your Labour buddies in Cardiff Bay and in Westminister, have led us not back to the Dark ages, but back to the Jurassic Period, when the 'Labour Dinosaurs' must have had as much to spend then as now, thanks to Labour 'signing' the Banks blank cheque to pay for the Banks greed fuelled stupidity!
Perhaps if Labour Members of the Council were to all offer to give up their Expenses for one year to help pay for the replacement of lamp posts, then we the Public, might consider that Labour was beginning to regain its Social responsibilities!”

“Jayne, Swansea - yes, lamp-posts have collapsed. One collapsed in London a few years ago and killed a woman.
Would you rather someone was killed in Swansea before the council took action?
If the lamp-posts are corroded then they can easily collapse without warning.
If it's dark, then eat more carrots or get a torch. Your eyes should be capable of adjusting to darkness. And if it is pitch black, then you probably have your eyes shut.”

“The council are removing lights judged as dangerous but have no money to replace them. As time goes on they will test more and more, remove more and more and Swansea will get darker and darker. I cannot get 1 to replace 5 removed in Glen Road in Norton.
The lights go out in Swansea as the Lib-Dems / Independents lead us in to the Dark Ages, ......sorry couldn't resist that.”
