WAYNE Routledge has followed Michu's lead by signing a new contract which will keep him at Swansea City until 2016.

Routledge had 18 months left on his current deal, but his stellar performances this season have been rewarded with a fresh three-and-a-half year deal.

Having played a bit-part role last term, the 28-year-old winger has become a key first-team figure under Michael Laudrup, scoring five goals in his 29 appearances so far in this campaign.

Routledge is the second player to commit his future to the Swans in the last week, after top-scorer Michu also extended his stay at the Liberty Stadium until 2016.

Swansea are the ninth club of Routledge's nomadic career, though the former Aston Villa and Tottenham man seems to be more settled in Wales than he ever has been.

Routledge cost Swansea around £1.75 million when he joined from Newcastle in the summer of 2011, and initially finding it difficult to force his way into Brendan Rodgers's first-choice plans.

But he has been outstanding this season, playing what he believes to be the best football of his life.

"I'm probably the happiest I've been and playing the best in my career," Routledge said.

"I'm getting a proper run and I'm just really happy.

"I think it shows in my performances."
