Swansea City chairman optimistic new signings are on the way

HUW Jenkins has revealed that “one or two” transfer window near-misses will finally join Swansea City in the summer.

And the Swansea chief has insisted Michael Laudrup is quite happy with his options for the rest of the season despite the failure to replace Danny Graham before the recent transfer deadline.

Swansea had indicated they would only sell Graham if they could find a player to fill his boots.

Yet the club ended up a striker light after letting Graham join Sunderland and failing to bring anyone in.

But Jenkins is adamant there are no concerns about a shortage of attacking options at the Liberty.

And he is also confident that Swansea will bolster their squad in the early part of the close season.

Laudrup is very keen on Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas, while Real Betis midfielder Jose Canas is widely expected to arrive in Wales this summer.

“Michael and I looked weeks ago at what we felt we needed to do in January and one of the things he wanted sooner rather than later was to sign Roland Lamah,” Jenkins said.

“We got that done as early as we could, and there were one or two other things which we worked on behind the scenes.

“Ideally we might have got the players in during January, but in a couple of cases the players who we felt were right for us wanted to stay with their current clubs until the summer.

“We will review the situation then, but they are things we have worked on and we feel we have put ourselves in a good position.

“We have planned these things in readiness for the summer.

“Hopefully, when the transfer window opens again, we can get things done quickly. Hopefully we can make sure we get our squad together before our pre-season trip — that’s our aim.”

Swansea did make some efforts to secure a replacement for Graham when it became clear that his long-anticipated move to Sunderland was going to happen.

But with the wheels in motion on a clutch of summer deals, Swansea only wanted a loan signing to act as a stopgap for the remainder of this campaign.

Scramble

That meant there was only a limited number of options on Laudrup’s deadline-day radar — and none of them came off.

“We were both pleased that we were not in a scramble trying to bring players in at the end of the transfer window and Michael is happy with his squad,” Jenkins added.

“We made the decision between us that selling Danny was the right decision to make at that time, and now we move on and get ready for the summer.”

Jenkins concedes that a new striker will be a top priority come the end of 2012-13 — but says Swansea will be no different from any other Premier league side on that score.

“I think nearly every club who are aiming to compete at the top end of the Premier League will be looking for forwards who can add something different,” he said.

“We will be looking to go down that road, and Michael is confident we can get the players we want in the summer.”
