SWANSEA City chairman Huw Jenkins has delivered a scathing attack on a decision to support a McDonald's restaurant by the Liberty Stadium.

He said the move by Swansea councillors on a planning committee to approve the drive-through restaurant could threaten future stadium expansion.

It will be built on vacant ground between the South Stand and Brunel Way.

Mr Jenkins said: "The local authority was well aware of our concerns and objections for a fast food outlet on the perimeter of the stadium and it remains to be seen whether the decision will have a detrimental effect for the further expansion plans we have for the Liberty Stadium," he said.

"Everyone is well aware that we have already started exploring the possibility of increasing the capacity at the stadium, improving fan facilities and car parking.

"There are thousands of supporters who would love to watch the Swans in action in the Premier League and we are keen to facilitate that.

"This decision may jeopardise that opportunity now for the people of Swansea." This week the planning committee voted by eight to one — with six abstentions — against an officer recommendation to refuse the restaurant.

They must now agree planning conditions before the scheme is formally approved.

The Liberty Stadium Management Company, which runs the stadium and has Swansea City, Ospreys and council representation on its board, had objected to the restaurant proposal.

According to the planning report presented to councillors, the objection was on the grounds that there were sufficient food outlets on site, and nearby. Traffic and air pollution concerns were also raised — but there was no mention of stadium expansion plans.

Outline planning permission for two restaurants at the site in question had previously been granted.

Speaking in the wake of the councillors' decision, Swansea-based McDonald's franchisee Ron Mounsey said he was delighted that the council had supported its plans, adding that the drive-through restaurant would create 75 jobs.

Swansea East MP Sian James has voiced her support of the restaurant job creation scheme.

But Mr Jenkins said a stadium expansion combined with the Swans' long-term growth would provide far more jobs than a McDonald's.

"Swansea as a city has made too many short-term decisions over the years," he said, adding: "The council has been singing from the rooftops since Swansea City gained promotion to the Premier League about the massive benefits it has brought to the city in terms of business and tourism. Yet they make a decision which goes against everything they've been preaching. It's baffling."

In his opinion, this week's decision "typifies why Swansea as a city has failed to grow and develop over the years".

Post readers have voiced their support of Mr Jenkins, judging by comments left on our website www.thisissouthwales.co.uk

The Post contacted restaurants close to the stadium but none had commented at the time of going to press.

“If McDonalds are saying they are prepared to employ 70 people if the project is approved, how would it sound if the Liberty Stadium say they are prepared to employ 100+ extra Stewards to accomodate the 10,000+ seat expansion of the stadium? Surely that's a better proposition for the local economy in having 100 people employed as opposed to 70.

I'm not sure how the mechanics work when it comes to Stewardry, I'm thinking there may be a rule for 1 steward for every 100 fans.

I personally would much rather see a larger stadium filled up with excited fans, than excited fans filled up with rubbish food.”

“Swansea City Kicked North End FC, Landore FC and Landore Cricket Club off thier home pitch because they wanted to set up an academy about 2 and a half years ago, the council bent over backwards to help them then and Swansea City FC didnt give a toss about anyone other than themselves back then. A request to ground share on a minimal basis was flatly refused.
The area by the way, has been left barren since - a complete waste that the local sports teams could have enjoyed using in the mean time at least.
What a shame that they are having a taste of thier own medicine now - going from bullying smaller teams by ignoring thier objections and pushing them out of thier homes to getting ignored in thier own objections to permission to build a restaurant near to them. Now they are bleating in the press for support.
    Life is a big circle.”

“"Swansea as a city has made too many short-term decisions over the years," - quite right HJ.

Why oh why is the ONLY railway station that serves the centre of Swansea a mile away from the main 'bus station? A detailed plan was produced in 2005 for the development of a PROPER local transport system for the Swansea area that, among other improvements, would have established a railway station for Morriston and the North of the City on the criminally under-used Swansea & District line; and would also have enabled travellers from outlying areas like Ammanford and Pontardulais to get to Swansea by rail without having to take what is currently a hugely discouraging and time-wasting detour via Llanelli; but that's been completely ignored/buried. A facelift to High Street station (although badly needed) and the Quadrant bus station, a bendy bus, and the re-establishment of a second track through Gowerton station together do not constitute an integrated public transport system for somewhere the size of Swansea.

What about the state the High Street's been in for years?

Remember the "Roman themed" pillars/bollards along Oxford Street, etc in the 1980s? They looked cheap and tacky when they first appeared, and excelled solely at promoting felt-tip pen grafitti - the subsequent explosion of which made them look even more tacky. How much (public money) did that all cost/waste?

And now this little gem. The jobs argument is completely bogus as HJ has pointed out. And the hypocrisy of leaping on the Swans Premier League bandwagon one minute, then jeopardising the growth of the club, its fan base, and its revenue-generating potential the next, is staggering.

It pains me to say it, but while we've got the beaches and the football team, Cardiff seem to have all the "town" planners.

Unbelievably brainless. "I'm NOT lovin' it."”

“nothing should be built next to the stadium as the land is needed for the stadium to function properly such as room for getting the supporters in and out safely.”

“This planning that was submitted by McDonald's would have been common knowledge to those involved with the running of our city planning submitted would give everyone a chance to come up with objections! Do you know an opposition party should oppose projects the are not beneficial to our city and should be vocal before not after and this is why they stand for election! What has any local Councillor done or even criticized the lose of the park and ride J45 sited in what must be most suitable parking facility's for away supporters you can walk to the Liberty Stadium from there through the enterprise park. Those who wanted to could make a day of it spending much needed revenue! Is it my imagination they don't much of an IQ between the lot of them maybe its the possibility of a few beef burgers "Free".”

“CitizenSpike, not sure if your aware bit this story has caused quite a buzz on facebook amongst Swans fans. Rightly or wrongly, because the article states, "Swansea East MP Sian James has voiced her support of the restaurant job creation scheme." Her and Labour colleges are having the blame. Although, judging from many of the comments I've read on facebook it seems most of them don't even realise our Council is run by the Lib Dem led coalition, and not Labour.”
