Swans players thrilled with Europa League draw
SWANSEA City’s players will be delighted after landing a tie with the top team in the Europa League, says general manager Alun Cowie.
Swansea have been drawn alongside Valencia in the group stages of the competition, while they also face Russian outfit Kuban Krasnoder and Swiss side St Gallen.
But two games with Spanish side Valencia — the former club of Swansea winger Pablo Hernandez — are the obvious highlights of the group stages.
Cowie said: “To get Valencia is a great draw. They are the No. 1 team in the competition according to the co-efficient and that’s a fantastic draw for us.
“It’s a great trip — Pablo Hernandez will be going home and we have six other Spaniards and that will be a great event and also a fantastic night at the Liberty.
“We’re in the competition to play teams like that.
“I can’t say I know a lot about Kuban Krasnoder, but we will do our research. The whole competition is a trip into the unknown for us and that certainly will be.
“It’s going to be a tough trip logistically as well as playing wise.
“St Gallen were in pot four so they will be seen as underdogs, but what a fantastic result for them, winning 4-2 in Spartak Moscow.
“You can’t take any team who do that lightly.”
Swansea midfielder Jonathan de Guzman added: “It will be difficult, Valencia are a great team and Kuban did well against Feyenoord.
“But I believe second place is definitely a reachable target. For the club it is fantastic to perform at this level anyway.”
