Surf champ gets on board to aid beach fundraiser
A SWANSEA-BORN surfing legend rarely has time to stop for a cuppa these days.
But when Chris "Guts" Griffiths, who is Welsh, British and European surfing champion, returned to the water at Langland Bay, he had a giant coffee mug in hand in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support's major fundraiser.
The unusual stunt was staged to promote the World's Biggest Coffee Morning next month.
It is the largest charity event of its kind, and this time around, Swansea will be putting a slightly different twist on the event, with the BIG Beach Coffee Break being held at Langland Bay on Saturday, September 25.
Chris said: "The BIG Beach Coffee Break is the perfect event to reflect what this area and the local community are capable of when it comes to good causes, so I'm happy to be a part of it."
It is hoped that the event, which is being supported by Surfside Cafés, will help draw crowds to the beach to take part in beach games, free surfing sessions and volleyball.
Café owner Nigel Calcutt will be playing host to a three-hour coffee extravaganza between 9am and noon, where customers will be handed a free coffee in lieu of a donation to Macmillan.
He will also be giving away free refreshments to walkers who complete a circular trail around all three Surfside Cafés at Caswell, Langland and Rotherslade.
Nigel added: "We have been supporting Macmillan for a number of years, and we see this as a great opportunity to help raise awareness of this incredible charity and the vital services it provides."
Macmillan has around 200 professionals working across Wales. There are also Macmillan occupational therapists, welfare benefits advisers, pharmacists and physiotherapists, who all support people affected by cancer.
Cocktail evenings, pub quizzes and fancy dress parties are popular ways of raising funds for the charity.
