WELSH superstar Sir Tom Jones has thrown his overwhelming support behind a bid to help Stuart Cable's band soar to No.1 in the charts.

Sir Tom is the latest in a chorus of celebrities, along with the Evening Post, moved to support the legendary drummer's group Killing For Company after they released a charity single in his memory.

It was a month ago that Stuart died.

Charities Teenage Cancer Trust and Ty Hafan Children's Hospice are set to benefit through the single, entitled Former Mining Town.

The band exclusively revealed to the Post Sir Tom had personally phoned them to lend his support, despite his extremely busy schedule with the promotion of his new album.

Sir Tom said: "I back the campaign wholeheartedly, as me and Stuart were really good friends. I have been a supporter of the Teenage Cancer Trust for a number of years. It's a very worthy charity."

Members of Killing for Company said Tom's son Mark had said he wanted the single "to go as high as it can".

Support has already been won from Oasis, as the former Stereophonics drummer was good friends with Liam Gallagher.

They have also taken personal phone calls from a range of stars including actor Neil Morrissey and presenter Gail Porter pledging their backing.

Stereophonics bandmate Kelly Jones, Welsh boxing legend Joe Calzaghe, Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon, Grant Nicholas, from Feeder, and Sharon Corr, of The Corrs, are all involved in the charity single campaign.

The band also exclusively revealed such has been the demand for the performance of the charity single that they have had to search for a drummer to stand-in far sooner than they would have ever expected.

They said no-one could ever replace Stuart, but the late drummer's brother Paul was adamant the group should go out there and perform and supported the decision to bring Aled Richards from Catatonia onboard.

"Aled knows nine out of 10 of Stu's stories and it makes the process less painful," they added.

They said no firm decision had been made to whether or not Aled would be a permanent fixture in the line-up.

Blanche Sainsbury, managing director of South West Wales Media, added: "The Evening Post is delighted to be supporting Killing for Company in getting their charity single to No.1.

"We urge our readers to get behind the campaign. For only 79p you buy a great track when you download Former Mining Town via iTunes, support two very important charities and make an individual contribution in memory of Stuart Cable," she said.

"Good luck to Rachel (Stuart's girlfriend) and the band."

“Not a bad tune that, I've just bought it on iTunes. It's for a good casue, so why not!!

Yet still, even on a "hear feltt" story like this, you have to have a cynical comment from Llanelli, the wart on Swansea's bottom.”

“I have indeed bought this song, so have my kids, and many of my friends. It's proceeds are going to 2 charities close to my heart (TY Hafan & Teen Cancer Trust), having been a cancer patient when I was 34 I want to help. I reached 40 this year, in May, as did Stuart Cable, but he only lived a short while past his birthday. The song is an awesome tune, and it will I'm sure appeal to many people. It's heartwarming to see so many Welsh celebs backing this, and local tv & radio, and of course The Evening Post. We need to get this heard in the rest of the UK though.I noticed a few promotion posters in Cardiff yesterday advertising the song. Killing For Company are a great Welsh band, I live in hopes they will get to #1 with this, and it will spur them on to continue the band.”

“Now seems to be a good time to ask Tom Jones for anything because he certainly seems to want British support these days.”
