Dylan Thomas Theatre

DEPRESSION-ERA California was recreated on a Swansea stage in this new production of John Steinbeck's tragic novel, Of Mice and Men.

Directed by Dean Verbeck and starring James Morgan and Richard Burman, the tale of wandering workers George Milton and Lennie Small, the smooth-talking grafter and his mentally disabled companion, was brought to life in a faithful retelling which perfectly captured the love/hate relationship between the two main protagonists.

With a strong cast of suitably grimy workers, the hardships of the time were summed up with a fine performance by Greg Arthur as the heartless Carlson, who become a pantomime villain of sorts following his treatment of Candy's dog.

And it was the dog himself, played by a real live and well-behaved black labrador, which added an extra dash of humanity to proceedings — as well as emitting a few 'awwwws' from the animal-lovers in the crowd.

A fine production of a timeless classic.
