The legendary Status Quo are scheduled to comes to Swansea this summer to headline an August Bank Holiday weekend of music. Organisers hope the popular rockers will attract thousands of loyal fans to the city
Their gig is likely to pull in thousands of people and prove a money-spinner for the area. Bosses have still to confirm further details although it is thought likely the Quo's August 25 concert might form just part of a bigger, three-day event. Headline acts for the other two days may be announced in the next month or so. Tickets go on sale this Sunday.
The city has a proven track record of hosting successful events such as the BBC's Proms in the Park. However, last year, that event moved to Caerphilly.
But shows by rocker Rod Stewart and boy band JLS at the Liberty Stadium last summer both proved massive hits.
Hits
During their heyday Status Quo, led by singer Francis Rossi, 62, and guitarist Rick Parfitt, 63, inspired the legendary music "mockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap with their hardcore lifestyle and open abuse of drink and drugs.
But Rossi and Parfitt, who have been playing together for more than 40 years and chalked up 22 British Top 10 hits including Rockin' All Over The World and Whatever You Want, are now said to be "fully signed up members of The Establishment".
Rossi said: "We're really excited to be performing back in Swansea after so long.
"Nothing beats playing live at a big outdoor summer event."
A council spokesman added: "This is going to be a great addition to the Swansea Bay Festival Summer Programme, which is already starting to fill up.
"Not only will it attract music-goers from within the city, but will also appeal to visitors from further afield, many of whom will hopefully combine the concert with a short break in the Swansea Bay area as well."
Quo fan club member Helen Wright from Morriston said she was looking forward to seeing 'the elder statesmen of rock'.
"They are one of the all-time rock legends and I for one can't wait to see them again."

“I bought tickets for the Sham Festival a few years ago when it ended up ***** up, I would like to go to this but I have lost confidence in the promotors, for that gig our local record store Dericks took my money but they refused to give me back my booking fee even though they were agents for Ticketmaster, the Sham Festival and Dericks are con men, avoid.”

“Oh no! Who on Swansea Council arranges these things? Did he/she stop listening and buying music from Woolworth's in the 80s? We've had The Who, Elton John, Rod Stewart and now this. I'm 53 myself but I'm desperate for a big, open air heavy metal rock show to come to Swansea. Status Quo come to Cardiff like clockwork every December so their local fans are well served. Finally, no way did the Quo inspire Spinal Tap. Quo are virtually unheard off in the U.S. Rob Reiner's Spinal Tap was inspired by The Who, Sabbath, Zeppelin and U.F.O.”
