Star singers tune up for big-screen debut
FORGET Starman — these are Star pupils.
A talented school choir has plenty to sing about after taking a lead role in a new musical movie.
Youngsters from Cwmtawe school in Pontardawe swapped the classroom for the film set and recording studio for the new film Hunky Dory — and the soundtrack features the likes of David Bowie, ELO and The Beach Boys.
The film, starring Minnie Driver, is set in the sweltering summer of 1976 and tells the story of a former West End star who has fallen on hard times and comes home to teach — deciding to puts on a rock opera version of Shakespeare's The Tempest for the school's end of year show.
As well as playing the part of the school choir in the film, the Cwmtawe youngsters also recorded the movie soundtrack.
Paul Gratrix, head of music at the school, said: "It was a tremendous experience for the youngsters.
"They really rose to the occasion, and turned in fantastic performances.
"They had one day rehearsal with the crew, and then two days in the recording studio with an orchestra, a rock band, and the soloists.
"Then it was six days of on-set filming — including all-night sessions.
"I think the whole process was a real eye-opener for the choir."
Filming has been taking place at Bishop Gore school in Sketty, Swansea, during the summer holidays.
With most of the footage in the can, and the songs recorded, the action moves to the editing studio, with a release date expected next spring.
The film is being produced by Jon Finn, the man behind Billy Elliot, and stars Haydn Gwynne, Bob Pugh and Steve Spiers, alongside Minnie.
Mr Gratrix said: "I think all the youngsters realise what an amazing opportunity it was — and I am sure it is something they will never forget."
