AN X FACTOR winner will bring extra sparkle to Carmarthen on Bonfire Night.

Matt Cardle, who won the competition in 2010, will perform at the annual fireworks celebration at Carmarthen Park, on Monday, November 5.

The news comes after it was revealed earlier this week that another X Factor winner — Joe McElderry — who won the talent show in 2009, will perform at Swansea's fireworks show.

A former painter and decorator, 21-year-old Matt rose to fame after beating competition from fellow stars Cher Lloyd and One Direction in the ITV contest.

Mark Franklin, programme director at Radio Carmarthenshire and Scarlet FM, which is supporting the event, said: "We've got a proud tradition in Carmarthenshire of attracting some of the best musical talent in the country.

"It was only a few months ago that we had Alexandra Burke and Stooshe performing at the Enjoy Music Festival in Llanelli.

"It's great news that we've been able to secure Matt for Carmarthenshire's annual fireworks display.

"He's an artist that will appeal to people of all ages and the many thousands of local people who tune into The X Factor every Saturday and Sunday."

Carmarthen Round Table host the West Wales display and there will be plenty of side attractions for all the family, including children's rides, sweets stalls, hot and cold food, plus tea, coffee and soft drinks.

Joe McElderry, who later went on to win Popstar to Operastar, will perform at the annual fireworks celebration at St Helen's Rugby Ground, from 6.30pm.

Only Boys Aloud and Port Talbot dance group Nu Sxool — who came third in Britain's Got Talent this year — will join the singer.

The announcement comes after a summer of big music acts hitting the city — including Status Quo and Steps.

Meanwhile, emergency services have once again joined together to ask people to "Be a Nice Guy" this Halloween and Bonfire nights.

The campaign is an all-Wales community safety initiative, with Mid and West Wales Fire Service joining with partner agencies, including Dyfed Powys Police and South Wales Police to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour during the two holidays.

With fireworks now widely on sale across the country, MWWFRS is reminding people to plan their Bonfire Night celebrations in advance to ensure they are memorable for all the right reasons.

Anyone buying fireworks should do so from a reputable shop, and ensure they conform to the standard BS 7114, which should be written on the box.
