HOWARD Williams (Town suffered at Howe's hand, January 22) was quite correct in that the Freedom of the Borough of Port Talbot, or any Borough, should be given to people who serve the community, not support a person who serves a political party, at the expense of his own community. If you look at the policies of Maggie Thatcher's Government, with the support of people like "Lord Howe of Aberavon" they closed coal mines, the British Leyland car industry, lost 40,000 nurses, and 45,000 hospital beds, and had the audacity during the North Sea oil bonanza to pull a switch in London to commission the Ninian oil pipeline, and then two years later to sell off all the licences to the multinationals. They privatised the railways, but with a clause that the taxpayer still picks up the tab. Where the hell were the Labour MPs at the time, and where are they today? So with this coalition Government be prepared for more privation moves. Living standards to drop, workers' labour laws to be removed, again, the Citizens advice Bureau to close unless Labour voices are heard, like Neath and Port Talbot Trade councils to come out of their silence over the past ten years.

“Howe has certainly made his mark on Port Talbot, and it doesn't look that good. But give the man his due he played a big part in Maggie's downfall. Ravaged by a dead sheep!, remember that”
