Sport's not top priority

I READ in Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood is calling for a minimum two hours a week mandatory PE lessons (Post, September 26).

Ms Wood should get her priorities right. At a time when some school leavers are finishing their basic academic years lacking an acceptable understanding of the three Rs, Ms Wood is putting emphasis on the ability to run around the playing field in the shortest time!

As far as Ms Wood is concerned this idea is hardly a vote winner. While PE lessons have a valued place in the school curriculum, most of us need more than success in sport to make our way in life. Promoting good health is highly commendable, but let's not lose sight of the ball (excuse the pun). In the whole scheme of things very few individuals become Olympic champions, and for Ms Wood to suggest the Welsh Government should capitalise on the London 2012 Games by increasing PE in schools shows a surprising misunderstanding of what is important to future job seekers.

Most employers expect a degree of literacy and numeracy when taking on school leavers, but an ability to pole vault or to be an absolute whizz in the relay race is rarely a requisite.

“However, grossly fat people waddling their way to our GP's are putting an enormous strain on our health services and finances .... not such a bad idea really is it?

Or we could tax fast food and anything with added sugar, oh and while we're at it ban sweeteners. If we actually did what was good for society sooooo many businesses would go bust - GOOD!”
