FOR weeks now the shops have been full of pretty pink trinkets that they claim are perfect for Mother's Day.

Lipsticks, bath foams, hankies and bangles galore have been wrapped in heart-covered paper ready for the mad rush to buy a gift for your mum.

After all, it's the one day of the year where we get to unabashedly tell her we love her.

To spare you from headless-chicken shopping syndrome this year, PETER SLEE compiled a selection of what we think your mother will really appreciate.

“On the run up to mother's day advertisers tried convincing us that Mother's everywhere wanted a particular product. They seem to think that 'Mother's' everywhere can be generalised in one particular category. They fail to realise that there are many differences and each woman is an individual. Some mothers are in their teens and others are pensioners. They have different likes and dislikes. A twenty year old mother would not appreciate a CD by some 1950s artist that would appeal to an eight year old! Fortunately I know my own mother's preferences by now and can laugh at many of the 'ideas' as I envisage how my mother would react if she received many of the items that were categorised as 'Perfect for Mother's Day'. Of course, Even traditional items such as chocolates should be considered carefully. A friend (who is a mother) has been dieting for weeks. She was doing so well and was delighted when the weight was falling off. However, when she received a huge box of chocolates from her offspring she ate the contents not to hurt his feelings and some of the weight went back on!
The object of buying gifts is to give something that the recipient will appreciate. This requires an in-depth knowledge of the specific mother that is only known to those people who know her well. The quicker advertisers realise that fact the sooner they can cut back on advertising and use the money they save to reduce the price of their merchandise. This will potentially enhance their sales as it will be in the price range of those on a tight budget. This will enable more mother's to have a gift that they really appreciate.”
