FAMILIES can beat the credit crunch by taking the kids for a free dip in a swimming pool.

Several leisure centres around the city are offering free swim sessions for youngsters. Centres at Penlan, Morriston, Cefn Hengoed and Penyrheol are all offering free sessions at certain times from Monday to Friday, during school holidays.

Christine George, Swansea Council's swimming development officer, said: "By providing free swimming it's hoped that youngsters will come and enjoy the water and keep fit. Being able to swim opens the doors to many other aquatic sports."

Dave Osbourne, Swansea Council's indoor leisure manager, said the Assembly Government's free swimming initiative was proving a big success.

He said: "Thousands of young people aged 16 and under attended free swimming sessions last summer. The figures are soaring again this year as parents look for ways of entertaining their children during the holidays without having to splash out."
