South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner vote goes to second count
The race to be South Wales Police's first elected crime commissioner has gone to a second count after no candidate get a majority in the first round.
Labour candidate Alun Michael polled the most votes across the force - 66,879 - but failed to reach the 51 per cent threshold needed for an outright win.

The South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner count is under way
The former MP has now gone into the second round of counting along with the runner-up, independent candidate and former policeman Mike Baker, who polled 46,264 votes.
Election officials are now counting the second vote preferences from the two eliminated candidates, Tory Caroline Jones and independent Tony Verderame, and redistributing the votes to Mr Michael and Mr Baker.

Meanwhile Conservative candidate Christopher Salmon won the commissioner election in Dyfed-Powys Police, defeating Labour candidate Christine Gwyther, while independents won in Gwent and North Wales, with former policeman Ian Johnston winning in Gwent and barrister Winston Roddick winning in North Wales.

“Standard procedure following resignation of an MP of a political party:
1. Chief Whip of party, at the start of proceedings in the HoC, moves a motion to command the Speaker to issue a warrant.
2. The Speaker issues a warrant to the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery.
3. The writ issued by Chancery fixes the date of the byelection.

“If ever there was an engineered election. Alun Michael, stands down as MP in a safe Labour seat, then stands for Labour as PCC. Election & byelection held on same day (Labour's choice) boosting number of labour voters turning out,guranteeing Michael a win. Zimbabwe type of democracy.”

“What a strange election. Nobody really understood what or who they were voting for. Millions spent on polling staff and schools closed. Very poor publicity across the media and candidates desperately fundraising for money to keep the campaigns going.
I honestly think that an appointment like this should be a non-political one. It will be interesting to see what happens closer to the next elections. For example if Alun Michael is confirmed as the winner, what are the bets that police resources will be concentrated on those safe or marginal Labour seats.”
