Sousa wants his Swans to stay ice-cold

PAULO Sousa has told Swansea City that staying cold will be key as they bid for a first-ever win at Hillsborough tomorrow.

Sheffield Wednesday come into the game in turmoil after a dreadful run of results saw boss Brian Laws axed last weekend.

And Sousa believes Swansea can heap further misery on the Owls — if they play with icy minds.

Swansea have scored only 18 league goals this season — the second lowest tally in the division — and saw points go begging against Nottingham Forest last time out after failing to take their chances.

And Sousa said: "We need to keep creating those opportunities but after that the last touch has to be better.

"Sometimes our players arrive too quickly when the chance comes.

"The desire to score is so big that sometimes the player's speed is too high.

"Sometimes, to make the right decision, we need to be more cold.

"We have talked about that with the players and we have worked hard on it in training — we have kept on repeating the moment when the chance comes.

"But in training the chance comes 10 times. In a match it only comes once and that's the one we have to take — and I know we have the players to do that."

Sousa admits the meagre goal tally is something he wants to improve as the halfway point in the season approaches.

But the Swansea manager also points to an excellent defensive record — his side have only conceded 18 times in the league — and suggests they are "not the only team who don't score too much".

Sousa argues that "three or four" Swansea players are normally in the opposition penalty area when they go forward — and has had a mild dig at Football League Show pundit Steve Claridge.

"I saw one programme (last Saturday) where they had an idea about us having one player in the box, but it's a completely wrong idea," he continued.

"I like him (Claridge), but he sees football differently from me."

Swansea are still without Garry Monk (calf) and Mark Gower (hamstring), but Tom Butler is back in contention after a knee problem.

Few if any changes appear likely despite the Forest defeat, which was only Swansea's second in 15 matches.

The departure of Laws is not ideal for Swansea given the impact a change of manager can often have on a team.

"It's always difficult when this happens," Sousa said.

"The manager had been there for a long time and I'm sure the players had a good relationship with him.

"They will find extra energy tomorrow because of that.

"But it's up to us make things difficult for them and to put more pressure on them from the beginning."

The Portuguese is also asking for more from his players when it comes to defending set-pieces after dead-ball goals were conceded against Peterborough and Forest.

"Teams are looking to cause problems for us there and they have done it a couple of times," he said.

"They have cost us points and we need to be stronger."

“im sorry paulo but i see the same as claridge. in the pre season we were getting 4 players in the box but the last 3 home games we have had only 1 in the box at the most. in fact in the last game dyer and cotterrill had to slow down and wait for players to get in the box as they were so far away and then the chance had gone. if we get players into the box for the wingers we will; score but it aint been happening in the last month!!!!”

“Seems like Paulo and the team have worked hard behind the scenes this week.
Playing a "sleeping giant" at their home ground is never easy at the best of times so let`s wish the Swans all the very best - I am sure whatever the result they will give a good account of themselves.
    In Paulo we trust.”
