A SPECTACULAR production of classic musical the Sound Of Music is being staged in Carmarthen next week.

The popular show is being performed by a cast of 80 from Carmarthen Youth Opera at the Lyric Theatre.

The production comes after months of organising and rehearsing by the young members — ranging in age from just 2½ to 21.

There are 15 songs, many of which will be instantly recognisable after the recent West End musical and Oscar- winning movie.

Leading the show is 20- year-old Georgina Tipping as Maria.

Artistic director Adrian Rowlands praised her for her tireless dedication. "It is a remarkable performance," he said. "She carries the whole show and is in practically in every scene.

"She really has impressed us all with her exceptional talent."

Popularity

He said the popularity of the Sound Of Music led to a surge in auditions for the show last year — with around 130 young people looking to secure a place on stage.

There is also a small army of backstage workers who make sure the sound, lights, scenery and costume changes run effortlessly to plan. The show features a choir of 30 nuns and is accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra.

Mr Rowlands said the whole team had been working very hard and promised to deliver a superb performance.

The first performance is on Monday and the show runs every day until Saturday, February 18, with shows at 7.30pm.

There are also two matinee performances taking place at 2.30pm on Wednesday, February 15, and Saturday, February 18.

Ticket details and prices are available at the Lyric Theatre box office.
