A DREFACH learner driver took his mother's car without permission to buy cannabis in Carmarthen, a court heard.

Appearing before Llanelli magistrates last Wednesday, Brian David Evans, 32, of Bryn Glas admitted taking the fiat Panda car on January 3.

He also admitted driving without a licence and driving without insurance on the same day.

Evans also pleaded guilty to cannabis possession on January 3.

Mitigating Robyn Reed said Evans, a learner driver, did have permission to use the car when accompanied by his mother. He added: "There was a misunderstanding, but he accepts he did not have any permission."

Mr Reed said the cannabis was for Evans's personal use.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until today for the preparation of a probation report.
