Smoke detector saves fire victim's life
A MAN rescued from his burning flat in Gower owes his life to a smoke detector and a quick-thinking neighbour.
The fire broke out in the kitchen of the man's home in Caswell during the early hours of the morning.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service's control received the emergency call at 2.55am yesterday from a neighbour who had heard the smoke detector going off.
Two fire engines from Swansea West and Swansea Central were sent to the scene at Llwyn-y-Mor, along with an ambulance.
Watch manager Ashley Hopkins of Swansea West's green watch said he assessed the situation on arrival and deployed his crew.
"They gained access to the property where a man was found asleep on the settee. He was led to safety by firefighters," he said
"This gentleman was extremely lucky thanks to the presence of a working smoke alarm and actions of his neighbour who contacted us."
It is understood the man escaped unharmed other than slight smoke inhalation.
Assistant county commander for Swansea Gary Williams added:"As part of our free home fire safety checks, we offer basic fire safety advice on how to keep as safe as possible from fire in your home and can fit new smoke alarms in your property. This simple step really can mean the difference between life and death and this service is completely free."
A home fire safety check takes about an hour to complete and by two Fire Service representatives.
