The appointment was made by Dyfed-Powys commissioner Christopher Salmon, the first Welsh commissioner to choose his chief constable.
Mr Price said it was a "difficult and challenging time" for the police service, and that he wanted to review how the force worked and ensure front line services were prioritised.

There were three candidates in the running to become boss of the biggest force in Wales and England — Mr Price, Ms Roberts and Dyfed-Powys Police deputy chief constable, Nick Ingram.
The previous chief constable, Ian Arundale, retired last year less than four years after the controversial departure of his predecessor Terry Grange.
