THERE is no need to slip into the post-Christmas blues this January.

A bright and tropical cocktail will be shaken up by Swansea musical theatre group, Musicality, who will keep spirits up with their production of Copacabana.

They will go to town on the Barry Manilow tune-fest at Swansea's Taliesin Arts Centre, with curtain-up in mid January.

And the show's musical director, Eleri Thomas, says they figured it would be just the ticket for an early 2013 pick-me-up.

"We wanted to do something very colourful after Christmas and some of our members are big Barry Manilow fans and have been to see him, so Copacabana was the ideal choice for us. And Barry might have been the butt of jokes for decades, but he has a killer knack for bright, heart-tugging three-minute sonatas which keep them coming back for more.

"It is a great one because it is one of those musicals where every song is a good one, there are just no weak songs in it at all."

The show takes up the sad tale of the beautiful showgirl, her barman lover and the leering Mafioso who scuppers their romance, in 1940s New York clubland.

Set in the Copacabana club it is dripping with razzle-dazzle, says Eleri. "We won't show the girls their costumes until the last minute because we want to keep that wow factor back for them.

"We will have proper showgirl head dresses, with the feathers, and a very bright set we have hired in, with a mirrored floor." The adult section of the group takes this one on, with some from the Musicality juniors adding some crowd-pleasing notes too.

The show high kicks it into Taliesin on Thursday, January 17, running until Saturday, January 19.
