Sharp shooters take aim at world championships
A CARMARTHEN shooting club is hoping that two young members can bring back medals from the World Championships in Munich next week.
Three Counties Shooting Club stars Danielle Jones, 20, and Coral Kennerley, 16, will be jetting out to Germany — in a team of 53 from Great Britain — for the World Championships from Tuesday, August 3, to Thursday, August 5.
Qualifying through their success at UK tournaments, competing in the sport has already seen them travel across the world this year — including a recent bronze medal for Danielle in India at the Commonwealth Championships — to compete against the top junior air pistol shooters.
Years of practice with coach John Kelman, and a very steady hand, is bringing success. The pair are getting in hours of practice in between their school and college studies.
"I went to a shooting club for the first time with my pony club when I was eight and I was taking part in a swimming, horse riding, running and shooting event. John saw some potential and I've been shooting ever since," said Danielle, from Llanllwni.
"I enjoy working hard, being successful and taking satisfaction from the fact that my hard work has paid off and I can win medals for my country.
"It's great travelling the world and experiencing different cultures. The World Championships are massive in shooting, so it would be great to do well in them.
"The Russian shooters are really good, and there's so many of them. Shooting is a very popular sport around Europe.
"You don't think of your rivals when you're competing though. You do training and stick to what you've practiced. If you do that, then hopefully it'll prove successful."
Coral, from Ceredigion, said: "One of the hardest things about the sport is that you've got to concentrate over such a long period of time."
