CONCERNS for the wellbeing of a man sparked a search operation at Aberavon Beach.

Port Talbot RNLI, along with the coastguard, were called into action on New Year's Day at 8.15pm following concern for a man in his 20s.

RNLI spokesman Mel Cooper said it was their first call out of the year.

"We were called at 8.15pm following reports of a person last seen on the rocks at Aberavon Beach," he said. "The lifeboat searched along the shore from the River Afan to River Neath.

"The coastguard and police were also on the scene. After a short while the person was found by the coastguard in a state of distress by Port Talbot docks. The search lasted one hour and 10 minutes."
