Sean McGoldrick ready to step up
HE may have missed out on a place at the London Olympic Games but Welsh bantamweight Sean McGoldrick is ready to answer a British Olympic Association SOS should injuries materialise in 2012.
Luke Campbell has already qualified in the bantamweight category but at last weekend¹s London Olympic test event McGoldrick once again highlighted his considerable talent by landing gold.
McGoldrick has been earmarked out for big things in the years ahead - he is already part of GB Boxing's development programme that is looking ahead to Rio in 2016 and after adding Olympic test event gold to his growing medal haul last weekend, Campbell will be nervously looking over his shoulder.
The Welsh fighter made a name for himself at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, where despite losing his final bout, he was eventually handed gold after Sri Lankan Manju Wanniarachchi was found guilty of an anti-doping violation.
McGoldrick may be looking ahead to winning gold in Rio in just over four years time but being next in line for London 2012 should Campbell suffer injury or illness the Welsh fighter is primed and ready if needs be.
“God forbid something happens to Luke Campbell, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but I would be ready to step in if the opportunity came my way,” said McGoldrick.
“My main focus in on the Rio 2016 Games. I am in the development squad for that event and my target is to get gold there.
“To win gold at the test event and to beat some experienced fighters along the way is fantastic.
“I had nothing to lose coming into this and it is a great achievement. I will take a lot of confidence from
this.
“2011 hasn't been a great year for me. I lost in the Worlds on a controversial decision but that happens and I lost in the Euros as well so it is good to end the year on a high.
“I had a hand operation at the end of last year which put me out of form a bit and I lost my rhythm from the Commonwealth Games.
“Hopefully they¹ll keep me involved in all the little tournaments and hopefully I’ll get to do a bit more sparring with Luke Campbell and the Olympic prospects.
“I’ll try and help them as much as I can now before they bring me along for 2016.”
British boxers dominated the final day of action at the London International Invitational as they came away with five gold medals and a bronze from six finals at the Olympic test event.
And McGoldrick admitted fighting at the London 2012 Olympic venue was an experience he’ll never forget.
“It’s fantastic to fight in this venue, it’s a great place,” added McGoldrick. “All the stuff backstage, all the work the guys back there do has been fantastic so come 2012 I think it’s going to be the best Olympics yet.
“Before when you fight you can walk around and everyone’s speaking the same language and it just makes you feel so much more at home.
“It makes such a good atmosphere and there is a real good buzz back there [in the locker room].
“It does make the Olympics seem more real now, I couldn’t wait for the Olympics just to come round just to watch them and to be involved at all, even in this small little bit is just amazing for me.
“Team GB are up there with the best in the world and they keep proving that over and over again.
“They go to the world championships, the European championships and keep winning medals wherever they are going.
“GB are genuinely up there with the best; Russia, Cuba, Uzbek, just everyone, they are one of the best countries in the world.”
