IN-FORM Swansea City stretched their unbeaten run to nine games in the Coca-Cola Championship with a richly deserved victory at Glanford Park.

The Swans are the form team in the Championship and they showed precisely why, as Scunthorpe were swept aside by Paulo Sousa's impressive side.

Craig Beattie opened the scoring with a precise free-kick in the first half, the striker's third goal in his last four games.

Former Ajax forward Cedric Van der Gun gave the Welsh side breathing space with a second goal after the break and the Swans never looked like surrendering their advantage, as they kept a fifth clean sheet in their last six games.

Swansea immediately stamped their authority on the game and they were nearly in front just five minutes in but Joe Allen fired wide of Joe Murphy's goal.

The Welsh side's crisp passing and movement was proving to be too much for Scunthorpe and the visitors fashioned another goalscoring opportunity but Beattie fired wide from 25 yards out.

The former Celtic striker spurned another chance after 18 minutes, when he scuffed his right-footed shot after a defensive error.

But the big striker made amends 31 minutes in, firing a free-kick beyond Murphy and into the bottom-right corner of the net from 25 yards out.

Scunthorpe's supporters were becoming disgruntled as Swansea remained on the front foot.

Van der Gun was proving to be a handful and the Dutchman set up Beattie, who was denied a second goal by a fine fingertip save by Murphy.

Scunthorpe never got into their stride in the first half, with Swansea proving to be difficult to break down.

Michael O'Connor had a half-chance on the stroke of half-time but his right-footed volley was comfortably dealt with by Dorus de Vries.

The visitors started where they left off after the break and after some good work from Thomas Butler on the left, Beattie found space in the area before unleashing a left-footed drive which was superbly saved by the agile Murphy.

The Iron showed more desire in the second half and started to ask some questions of the Swansea defence.

Gary Hooper raced away down the left but misplaced his pass to strike partner Paul Hayes.

But the home side were caught out after 67 minutes when Darren Pratley broke from midfield and fed Van der Gun, who raced in on goal and produced a clinical right-footed finish which went in off the post.

Van der Gun looked to have been brought down in the penalty area 12 minutes from time, but referee Karl Evans booked the forward for diving.

“Match report of this afternoon's home defeat in the clash against Swansea City

Swansea City stretched their unbeaten run to nine games with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

Man of the match Craig Beattie fired them in front after 32 minutes with his fifth of the season, crashing a 25 yard free-kick past keeper Joe Murphy.

Beattie proved a real thorn for the home defence all afternoon and might have finished with a hat-trick.

Before the interval he had a great shot from the edge of the box brilliantly turned away by Irishman Murphy.

And the Scunthorpe keeper denied Beattie again early in the second half from a flashing left foot shot.

Swansea looked a class act as they passed the ball around with ease.

They made certain of the points in the 67th minute when Darren Pratley released Cedric Van de Gun into the box and he finished clinically with a low shot into the bottom corner.

Scunthorpe, who had been in good form in front of their own fans, with ten points from the previous four home games, just could not get going.

They failed to muster a single worthwhile shot to trouble Dutch keeper Dorus De Vries in the visitors' goal”

“Unfortunately the forthcoming game against Cardiff City will only yield three points whether we "dive" or not.
So it is time to have a sense of proportion about this match though I have to admit to really looking forward to World War 3.
    In Paulo we trust.”

“Don`t know about that jack, Cardiff haven`t got that tag yet even with 8 penalties and the theatrics of Boothroyd and Chopra.”

“After the Beattie incident against Blackpool and Holloway's comments we could have done without Van der Gun getting booked for diving.

If we're not careful we'll be getting a reputation for cheating.”
