SCOTT Johnson is reported to have won the race to take over as Scotland's new rugby boss.

The former Ospreys director of coaching is set to succeed Andy Robinson having beaten Sean Lineen to the job, according to Scottish newspapers.

It will be the second time for Johnson to head up a national side, following his stint as Wales's caretaker coach in 2006.

Robinson stepped aside after the 21-16 defeat by Tonga last month. Scotland also lost to New Zealand and South Africa to complete a winless autumn.

Johnson was brought in as assistant to Robinson in the summer and the pair guided Scotland to a famous victory over Australia and wins over Fiji and Samoa on a triumphant summer tour.

But Scotland's disastrous November saw them plunge to 12th in the IRB's world rankings, and Johnson will be charged with restoring respect to Scottish rugby.

He left the Ospreys ten months ago. Former Italy prop Massimo Cuttita is tipped to work alongside him with Scotland, coaching the forwards.
