A NEATH school is getting ready to celebrate its half century at the heart of the community.

Catwg primary in Cadoxton is 50 years old this month, and as part of the celebrations pupils will be dressing in clothes from each of its five decades.

The time-travelling fashion show will bring to a close a week of events to mark the anniversary.

Head teacher Carol Bassett said: "The pupils are really excited about celebrating the school's birthday.

"We've got a lot of activities in the school, and we're hoping to get the whole community involved."

The celebrations kick-off with a social evening — including buffet and a band — for former pupils, parents and staff at the Glynclydach Coach House on March 19.

Then, on Monday March 22 — the 50th anniversary of the school's official opening — pupils will take part in a special morning assembly.

The following day the school is throwing open its doors to the community and putting on an exhibition of old photos and memorabilia from Catwg's 50 years.

Wednesday evening will see a concert featuring the school choir and Bryncoch Male Voice Choir, then on Friday, March 26, there will be a party for pupils who will be dressing in clothes from each of the school's five decades.

The head teacher said they want to hear from anybody with a connection with the school — whether they have moved away or are still living locally — and are especially keen to hear from anyone with old photos or other items to contributed to the exhibition.

She said: "There is a lovely atmosphere in the school, and everyone is looking forward to our 50th celebrations.

"The pupils have had a lot of fun looking at the different decades the school has been open.

"This is a real community school, and we're hoping everyone will get involved in the celebrations."
