AS the industrial skyline in Llanelli changes once more, hopes are rising of a new £10 million school being built on the former Draka works site.

The factory, formerly Delta and known to locals as the copperworks, was established in 1805 and once employed hundreds of workers.

It closed its doors for the final time last June, with work being transferred to Derby and Germany.

The plant's machinery has already been sold and shipped out and, last week, a huge crane arrived to take down several steel towers once used in the production of wire and cable.

With the Seaside area in need of a new primary school to replace the tired Lakefield and Copperworks schools, the site is seen by many as the ideal location.

Carmarthenshire Council spokeswoman Debbie Williams confirmed its commitment to building a new school, saying: "The new Seaside school is one of the council's next two priorities for development, along with new premises for Furnace school."

The Draka site is now the stated favoured option of the council, which previously aired the possibility of building on Crown Park, an idea which sparked outcry. "It all now rests on confirming the site is suitable for development for a school," said the spokeswoman.
