NEW South African signing Joe Snyman says he can't wait to get started at the Scarlets after sampling derby night in Llanelli.

Snyman arrived in South Wales last week after being released from his provincial contract with Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth.

He watched from the stands as the Scarlets succumbed 23-16 to their arch rivals in front of a white-hot 14,000-plus crowd. And having joined up with the squad at Parc y Scarlets for the first time yesterday, the 26-year-old lock is raring to go.

"It's great to be here, I met the boys last week and the coaching staff and had a good look round, and everyone's been very welcoming," he said. "There's a good feel and the stadium set-up's very impressive.

"I'm just eager to get going now and add whatever I can; the boys seem to have a good spirit, real ambition this season and a strong team ethic, so it will be good to be a part of it.

"I got a real sense of how much rugby means to this part of the world at the big derby.

"When I heard the Scarlets were coming up against the Ospreys early on in the campaign, I told my agent that he had to get me over here by then so I could see it for myself."

The 6ft 7in Snyman, who has also had spells at Natal Sharks, Golden Lions and Hawke's Bay in New Zealand, added: "I think the supporters are going to be great, I've already been stopped in the street with my wife Talitha, when they see me in a Scarlets jacket just to chat and welcome me to Llanelli."

Despite Friday's defeat, the Scarlets remain top of the RaboDirect Pro12 table after four rounds. They play Treviso in Italy on Saturday evening.
