Scarlets flanker Josh pretty handy at soccer too
WELSH international and Scarlets flanker Josh Turnbull switched codes on Saturday and netted the clinching goal in the final of the 40th annual Newcastle Emlyn six-a-side tournament.
The 21-year-old from Newcastle Emlyn shone for the Swans, a team comprising local players.
Sixteen teams were divided into four groups and the sizeable crowd was treated to a feast of football.
Another local side, holders All Stars, won Group A from Crannog, Newcastle Emlyn RFC and JJ Select, the latter a team playing in memory of talented defender Jimmy James who tragically died earlier this year.
Briton Ferry were top in Group B, which also included Newcastle Emlyn Firsts, St Dogmaels and Cawdor Cars.
Costcutter League side Maesglas ruled Group C at the expense of Llandysul A, Newcastle Emlyn Thirds and Bargod Rangers.
The eventual winners came through in Group D from Llandysul B, Celt Heroes and Cardigan Town.
In the semi-final the Swans sprang a 3-1 win against All Stars while Briton Ferry had to pull out the stops before winning 2-1 against Maesglas.
After a goalless first half in the final, Josh Harries fired the Swans into the lead and a late strike by super-fit Turnbull sealed victory. The winning squad were Andrew Jones, Josh Harries, Jake Harries, Steve Hicks, Adrian Hazelby, Gary Evans, Dafydd Llewellyn and Turnbull.
The popular choice as player of the tournament was Steve Hicks, who received his trophy from Gethin Davies of Castle Heating and Gas Services, Newcastle Emlyn.
