A WARNING has been issued over a telephone scam which claims to offer a banning system for nuisance calls.

Elderly people, especially in Llanelli, are being targeted by callers who say they represent the Telephone Preference Service or BT, and asked if they would like to stop receiving nuisance phone calls.

Carmarthenshire Council officers are warning that these callers only really want the personal information and bank details of individuals, so that they can try to withdraw money from the victim's bank or credit account.

“Another part of scams is to ask you to phone back using the number on your credit card for 'peace of mind'
If you don't get a dialling tone you're STILL connected to the scammer.
I complained of this to BT 10-15 years ago as it could disable alarm systems, very useful to thieves. Originally whoever put the phone down disconnected, Apparently BT did this so you could put one phone down to continue in another room.
Their answer was you'd be disconnected after 5 min. but I wasn't for 50min.
Every call I have goes to answer machine unless I recognise the number, funny I never get messages.”

“I regularly receive telephone calls from the Indian sub-continent, from Archie, Walter, or Julie, claiming to be from "the Windows Company, because my computer is slowing down". They almost demand I switch my computer on NOW, " and we will tell you what code to key in". I tell them, " tough luck chum", and hang up.”

    “Theikmarket,
Don't you believe it. I have a friend who works in the fraud section of a major police force. I called on him one day for lunch and he was still at his desk. We chatted about this type of fraud and I said the same thing as you did. He handed me a thick file and informed me those were the complaints for just the current week. Some of the duped were supposedly intelligent people, businessmen professionals that sort.

He showed me one letter from a businessman who had been duped out of £25,000 and when he was asked for another £10,00 sent that as well!

The message is DO NOT GIVE OVER ANYTHING TO ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST.”

“I felt obligated to post because I'm amazed at how these scammers try everything just to get their hands on somebody else's hard-earned money. But unfortunately for these crooks, people are now fully aware. If you'd read posts at consumer complaint websites such as http://tinyurl.com/7qacsxd they're mostly about how annoying the scammers are and NEVER about how the victim lost money or fell for the scheme. So, it looks to me, it won't be long till these scammers are forced to change professions. Hahaha!”
