Have Your Say: Unfair view of worth ethic
I write in response to W J Vonk's letter (Have Your Say, Oct 21) about the proposed increase in the number of Assembly Members.
I note that he calls the 20 members elected under the regional list system "non-elected members" and "hangers on" and that proper scrutiny suffers as a consequence.
I think it's a disgrace to castigate members, and make conclusions on their work ethic and how they were elected.
He should know, for example, South Wales West has particularly good legislators in the form of Suzy Davies and Byron Davies, who hold the Welsh Government to account on a regular basis and really scrutinise proposed legislation on a wide range of topics.
I'd also like to remind W J Vonk that if we got rid of the "hangers on" that the Labour Party would control 70 per cent of the seats in the Senedd under the First Past the Post System.
He's deluded if he thinks that there would be any real scrutiny or debate then!
