Have Your Say: Time dispel whiskey myth
IT was refreshing to read something positive from V L Griffiths regarding Dylan Thomas in his praise of his poem Fern Hill. However, the letter also repeats the myth of the poet drinking 'eighteen shots of whiskey' prior to his demise in New York.
Recent biographies have disputed this claim with evidence to put the tale of the "eighteen whiskeys" down to Dylan's boasting — which he often did regarding his drinking prowess. Avid followers of the poet also know that his death was attributable to the scandalous medical treatment he received by a quack doctor in New York. Yes we all know the poet liked a drink, but it is time for the whiskey story to be put to bed once and for all.
