Have Your Say: Singer is no opera star
THE article Singer Paul steps onto red carpet at Premier (Post Oct 19) goes on to refer to him as "Port Talbot opera singer".
This is not correct.
Although I admire what he has achieved following his success on Britain's Got Talent, he is no opera singer. He is a singer who includes the occasional operatic aria in his concert repertoire.
I have previously written to you regarding the elevation of Katherine Jenkins to opera star status in your columns.
It pleases me that these days she is usually referred to as classical singer or Neath super star.
I am mindful that my criticism may seem petty, but I write as someone, who in his younger days studied at the Guildhall School of Music and appeared on the operatic stage.
Your recent review of Tosca at the Grand theatre was excellent. Having attended the Saturday evening performance, I can agree that the performance of Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones (Cavaradossi) was top class — worthy of being referred to as "an opera star".
