Have Your Say: Plenty better than Dylan
I TOTALLY agree with Andrew Hinton's remarks in his letter on Dylan Thomas (Have Your Say, Oct 1). I taught literature for more than 20 years and most of my students preferred poets such as W B Yeats or W H Auden to Thomas as they were more truthful. As one pointed out: a good 80 per cent of the work Dylan published just does not make any sense! Even his most quoted poems can be questioned e.g. If it is a "good night" why not "go gently into it?" There are other poets writing today, eg Nigel Jenkins, who are probably better writers and definitely better men than Dylan Thomas, but they are rarely mentioned.
