Have Your Say: Names starred at Empire
HAVING been from and brought up in Swansea I have been following your reports on the Palace Theatre with great interest.
However, there seems to be some inaccuracies in your report (Post, Sept 5).
Having been good friends with the stage doorkeeper of the Empire Theatre, Charlie Davies, I spent quite some time there, and can recall seeing Laurel and Hardy, when performing at the Empire, sitting side by side on the window sills of Piper's the newsagents next to the stage door.
Morecambe and Wise were also appearing at the Empire, not the Palace Theatre in the 1950s. My wife and I saw them walking down St Helens Road together at the time.
They had met by chance in 1946 when previously performing at the Empire Theatre, deciding then to become a double act.
It is sad to see the Palace Theatre in such disrepair and I support your campaign for its preservation.
I J Edwards
